What Categories Should a Roofing Company Use on Google Business?

Your Google Business Profile category is one of the most important fields you will fill out — and one of the most commonly done wrong. The wrong category means Google doesn't know when to show you. The right category means you show up when local homeowners are actively looking for what you do.

The Primary Category — Get This Right First

Your primary category is the single most important category selection you make. For a roofing company, your primary category should almost always be "Roofing Contractor." Not "Contractor." Not "Home Improvement." Not "Construction Company." The most specific, accurate option wins.

Google uses your primary category to determine which searches to show you for. "Roofing Contractor" tells Google to show you when someone searches "roofing contractor near me," "roof repair [city]," "roofing company [zip code]," and related searches. The broader your category, the more you compete with businesses that have nothing to do with roofing.

Secondary Categories — Use All of Them

Google allows up to 9 additional categories beyond your primary. For a roofing company, relevant secondary categories typically include:

  • Roof Repair Service
  • Gutter Installation Service (if you offer it)
  • Skylight Contractor (if applicable)
  • Siding Contractor (if you offer siding)
  • General Contractor (if you do broader work)

Only add categories for services you actually offer. Adding irrelevant categories can hurt your ranking for your primary service. If you do roofing and nothing else — use Roofing Contractor as primary and Roof Repair Service as your main secondary.

How to Change Your Categories

Log into your Google Business Profile at business.google.com. Click "Edit profile." Find the "Category" field. Your primary category is the first one listed. Click to search for more specific options. Save when done. Changes typically take 24–48 hours to take effect in search results.

Expect a small ranking fluctuation in the first week. Google re-evaluates your profile when information changes. Within 2–4 weeks, if your category is now more specific and accurate, you should see improvement in your local ranking for your primary service searches.
